- Catch a Film at the Hyde Park Picture House
Opened in 1914, the Hyde Park Picture House feels like a step back in time as soon as you pass through its doors. Still a functioning cinema with a bustling schedule, you can see the latest blockbusters there, or opt for something more ‘indie’.
- Have a Drink on the Roof at Belgrave Music Hall
The Belgrave Music Hall is a three-floor venue for gigs, stand-up comedy, films and art exhibitions; but it’s best feature isn’t on any of the three floors. It’s roof hosts a bar, pizza kitchen and burger restaurant!
- Shop ‘til you Drop at Kirgate Market
Kirgate Market is the largest covered market in Europe and is home to over 800 stalls. Perhaps more famous for being the home of Marks & Spencer, you’ll find something for everyone here.
- Admire the Eccup Reservoir
A little out into the suburbs, the Eccup Reservoir is a stunning sight of natural beauty; and one worth taking some relaxation time around. A popular walking and running route, it’s recommended for a few hours to avoid the hectic city centre.
- Borrow a Book at The Leeds Library
The Leeds Library is a slice of history: the oldest subscription library service in the UK, having been founded in 1768. Tours and individual appointments for visits are available.
- Eat Yorkshire Meat at Boss Burgers
Boss Burgers is one of a few independent burger restaurants in Leeds and use only one grass-fed Yorkshire cattle for their meat. Their burgers are of higher quality than even the big-name chains you’ll find in the city centre – so stick Yorkshire and eat better!
- Dance the Night Away at the Leeds West Indian Carnival
Why stick to Notting Hill when you can head North and still party? The Leeds West Indian Carnival also takes place every August Bank Holiday weekend but lasts for three full days and is one of the longest serving West Indian carnivals in Europe.
- Have a Picnic at Meanwood Park
Meanwood Park spans for almost 72 acres. Several picnic spots, children’s play areas and flower displays feature across the park and make it a great place for an hour or two’s break.
- Explore ‘below the stairs’ at Temple Newsam House
A Tudor-Jacobean house with Capability Brown-landscaped gardens, the real gem of Temple Newsam House is underneath it. An underground network of cellars and rooms are where servants and staff once serviced the house from – and it’s both fascinating and claustrophobic to visit.

Organised tours of Holbeck Cemetery include visits of historical graves of interest including Victorian investors, commonwealth war graves and previous mayors.

There’s no sign and no directions, but if you can find it, the prohibition-themed Maven Bar has a plethora of delights for you to experience. Try a mixologist masterclass and learn some new skills!
Founded in 1715, Whitelock’s is the oldest pub in Leeds – so it’s really in history’s service that you stop here for a quick drink. The interior dates from the 1800s or there’s a beer garden so you can enjoy your beverage in whatever historical period you prefer.
