Favourite things to do in Sheffield

We could write pages of info on things to do in Sheffield, but half of the fun is getting out there and exploring for yourself – you never know what interesting adventures you might chance upon! But as a starting point for visitors who are new to the city, here are some of our top tips…

Pubs

Like any self-respecting city, Sheffield has plenty of pubs for you to grab a pint of your favourite tipple. Head to Botanical and grab some of their great grub too, try Casbah for a late drink, or popular student haunt The Cavendish for a game of pool. Every visitor to Sheffield should stop off in the quaint and charming Queen's Head by the bus station too – the oldest domestic building in the city, built way back in 1475, it’s the perfect backdrop for a photo opportunity.

Culture

If you’re a lover of arts and crafts, head to the Millennium Gallery and check out the Ruskin exhibition. There’s also the Sheffield Weston Park Museum where you can learn about the local history, and the weird and wonderful Alfred Denny Museum of Zoology. A wander around Sheffield Cathedral makes a welcome break from the busy streets, and if you plan in advance, you could also book a ticket for a play or performance at the Crucible or Lyceum Theatre.

Clubs

For alternative vibes, the top nightclub in Sheffield has to be Corporation, but there are plenty of others to choose from too. The Plug hosts weekly club nights and live bands across a variety of genres, and the Viper Rooms will keep you dancing all night to the sounds of indie, house and much more. Red Room, Reflex and Kandie Klub are also worth checking out.

Parks and gardens

With our hostel being located a little walk from the city, you can easily incorporate a visit to Crookes Valley Park as you wander into town. Organise a picnic with your new friends, stroll around almost 12 acres of green space, go fishing in the lake – a lovely spot for the warmer months. You also have the Peace Gardens, Winter Garden and Botanical Gardens – complete with an old bear pit – to explore in Sheffield. Of course this is just a small taste of things to do in Sheffield – there are loads of restaurants, a fab selection of chain and independent retail stores and plenty more to explore!
